Treat Your Own Neck

By Tony Garrow, D. C. Do you ever get headaches or migraines? Does your neck ever hurt or get stiff? Do you often feel physically tired? Do you get pain down your shoulders and arms? All of these symptoms and more may be coming from your neck. Due to the stresses of everyday life, many of us have developed abnormal postures which cause tension on the neck. For example, did you know that sitting at the computer for long periods of time can cause bad posture, stress on the neck, and unnecessary symptoms? Regular stretches, may help to prevent bad posture. First, you need to determine if your posture is not normal. Take a look at your self in the mirror or have someone else look at you. Stand in your normal relaxed posture and see if you notice if your head tilts to one side or one shoulder is lower than the other. Check to see if your shoulders look too rounded or if your head appears to stick out too far forward, which is very common. And now you're ready for your stretches. You simply move your body in the opposite direction of the bad posture. For example, if your head leans too forward, then bring your head straight back and hold it for 10 seconds. You should start out slow and work your way up to about 20-40 repetitions per day. If you feel any pain or discomfort during the stretches or if they do not seem to be helping then contact a Chiropractor that specializes in posture right away. Good luck with your new stretches. |
